About Me
I have been in private practice for over thirty years. Learning about temperament has been a wellspring in my life both personally and professionally. It’s an essential resource I draw on again and again to understand and to honor our individual versions of normal.
Mindfulness, concrete psychoeducational tools to manage challenges such as anxiety and stress and the relationship and parenting work of John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman are some of the modalities I draw from frequently. They are examples of fundamental and complementary resources I utilize in both my working and private life.
My education and growth are ongoing. My years as a mother, wife, therapist, and now a grandmother with current hands-on young family experience have honed my passions, skills, and instincts.
Why do I specialize in temperament?
I couldn’t find any descriptions of children like my son until he was two years old when I found temperament research that included a wider range of normal than I’d read anywhere else. My son’s temperament was similar to my own. My second child had aspects of both my temperament and her father’s. It took me a long time for me to turn the temperament lens on myself, my husband, and my adult clients. The research focus at the time was largely on children.
I had worked extensively with parents of temperamentally-extreme children. I knew first-hand how challenging it could be to parent a normal child with extremes such as high sensitivity, low adaptability, and high intensity. It’s just as helpful for adults who have extremes in their temperaments to have access to information and support about variance in normal temperaments.
This is why I’m passionate about temperament, and why I offer temperament assessments and support. Read more about temperament here to learn how it could help you, your child, or other adults in your life.
